The Union City Board of Education, together with Mayor and State Senator Brian P. Stack and the Union City Board of Commissioners, has decided to close all Union City schools as a precautionary measure against the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).
As of this writing, there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Union City. Nevertheless, being mindful of the health and safety of our students, staff, and community—which is, as always, our highest priority—and in coordination with neighboring school districts in Hudson County, we have reached the decision that we feel necessary to ensure the well-being of our Union City family.
Schools will be closed effective Monday, March 16, and will remain closed until further notice.
In order to continue teaching our students remotely, we are implementing online instruction for grades 1 through 12, and those students who have been identified as needing technology will be provided with laptops. Online instruction for elementary school students will be from 8:00 a.m. to 12:10 p.m., and for high school and middle school students from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily. All students are expected to participate as if they were attending regular classes. Pre-K and kindergarten students will receive weekly take-home instructional packets. Please see the attached instructions for more information.
We will also continue to provide breakfast and lunch to our students during this time. Every student will receive a letter today in school containing a voucher with a unique, individual bar code assigned to that child. The student and/or parent/guardian must report to their school on Tuesday, March 24, between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. for middle and high schools, and between 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. for elementary schools to collect one week’s food supply for that child, as well as any technology tools (including laptops, if so identified) and other educational materials. If schools continue to remain closed, you will receive further instructions regarding when to pick up additional packages of food and educational materials.
We want to emphasize again that this is a precautionary measure only. We encourage everyone to follow proper sanitary practices as detailed by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) at www.cdc.gov/COVID19 and to stay safe. Please reach out to the BOE offices with any questions or concerns.

Al escribir estas líneas, no hay ningún caso confirmado de COVID-19 en Union City. El estudiante y/o el padre/tutor deben presentarse a su escuela el martes 24 de marzo, entre las 8:00 y las 10:00 a.m. para las escuelas intermedias y secundarias, y entre las 12:30 y las 2:30 p.m. para las escuelas primarias para recoger el suministro de alimentos de una semana para el/la estudiante, así como cualquier herramienta tecnológica (incluidas las computadoras portátiles, si así se identifica) y otros materiales educativos. Si las escuelas permanezcan cerradas, recibirá más instrucciones sobre cuándo recoger paquetes adicionales de alimentos y materiales educativos.
