On December 18, 1787, New Jersey became the 3rd state to ratify the U.S. Constitution and was admitted into the Union, with delegates from all 13 counties in New Jersey voting unanimously. New Jersey was nicknamed “The Garden State" in the nineteenth century by Abraham Browning, a Camden attorney, who stated, "the Garden State is an immense barrel, filled with good things to eat and open at both ends, with Pennsylvanians grabbing from one end and New Yorkers from the other.”
